MY LIFE IN TEACHING

An interview with Professor Rona Laurie BA (Hons), FGSM, LRAM, LGSM, FRSA. Fellow of STSD
by Mary Greenslade

Over coffee and biscuits we chatted about mutual friends and colleagues, and then our talk turned to Rona's teaching career which has lasted well over 50 years.

After receiving an Honours degree in English from Birmingham University, and then being expected to teach, Rona knew that her heart was set on an acting career. A course at RADA was followed by touring and weekly Rep. At the age of 34 she was playing parts in the West End but her agent advised a change before coming back to the theatre to play leading roles. Rona appreciated the wisdom of this and at that point the Guildhall School invited her to give lectures - for one guinea (£1.05p) a week - on drama and theatre to student actors and teachers. In retrospect this was a momentous decision.
